Sacrificing the Muses

How many wind turbines can a mountain “handle”?

Sacrificing the Muses is an investigation by multimedia journalist Elli Xypolitaki into the expansion of wind energy on Mount Helicon, the “mountain of the Muses”, and the growing questions around how much development a single landscape can sustain.

Today, 29 wind farms with 118 turbines and a total installed capacity of 313 MW operate on Mount Helicon, while dozens of additional projects have entered the licensing process. The mountain is part of Central Greece, the country’s leading region for wind energy, with 2,603 MW of installed capacity.

The investigation looks at how Greece’s renewable energy ambitions intersect with local livelihoods, natural ecosystems and community concerns.

The story is only available in Greek.
