YOJO (Young Journalists) is iMEdD’s newsroom initiative: a digital-first, video-first newsroom dedicated to empowering the next generation of journalists. Designed as both a training hub and a disruptive publisher, YOJO delivers high-impact field reporting, immersive storytelling, and innovative breaking news coverage of global events and issues. It combines mentorship from experienced journalists with hands-on, up-to-the-minute newsroom experience, producing quality journalism in mobile-oriented formats to engage diverse, global audiences.

Role Summary

As Head of International News, you will lead YOJO’s international coverage and oversee a growing team of young reporters (recent graduates) and freelancers. Your mission is to ensure timely, transparent, and impactful daily reporting on global developments, international politics, human rights, climate, conflict, and cross-border investigations. This is a leadership role requiring editorial vision, strong ethical standards, operational agility, and a passion for mentoring the next generation of international correspondents.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

  • Develop and implement the editorial strategy for international news coverage, aligned with YOJO’s values: transparency, innovation, and independence.
  • Coordinate global story lists and field reporting plans, ensuring a balance between breaking news, features, and enterprise journalism.
  • Lead editorial decision-making for international and local assignments, including conflict zones and sensitive contexts.
  • Edit the daily stream of video stories on international affairs.

Team Management & Mentorship

  • Manage and mentor a diverse, international team of early-career reporters.
  • Support the onboarding, training, and development of graduate journalists through structured guidance and feedback.

Collaboration & Innovation

  • Work closely with the Executive Editor, Head of Newsgathering, Head of Innovation, Chief Technology Manager to develop story formats that are optimized for social and mobile platforms.
  • Champion the use of immersive technologies (AR, VR, XR), data journalism, and AI-assisted reporting to enhance international storytelling.

Operational Oversight

  • Assign and manage field deployments, travel, and safety protocols for international reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with editorial standards and fact-checking processes.
  • Maintain a strong network of international freelance contributors.

Audience Engagement & Impact

  • Shape quality reporting coverage directed at younger audiences, especially digital-first news avoiders.
  • Represent YOJO in editorial partnerships, conferences, and public speaking engagements where relevant.

Candidate Profile

  • 7+ years of proven experience in international journalism, including field reporting and newsroom leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience managing editorial teams; mentoring early-career journalists is a strong plus.
  • Outstanding news judgment, risk awareness, and ethical decision-making.
  • Passion for video-first storytelling and media innovation.
  • Comfortable working in bilingual/multicultural environments and across time zones.
  • Skilled in managing remote teams and coordinating international contributors.
