Data and Web Science Lab (DATALAB A.U.Th.) is an active research group engaged in research and innovation on ICT complex data science and engineering technologies, offering end-to-end multi way and multi scope analytics. Datalab has strong expertise in the following research topics: data mining and analysis for big data, information retrieval and core data management, design and development, massively parallel systems, strong theoretical background and decentralized applications.
- Collaborated with iMEdD on an experimental analysis of Greek parliamentary leaders’ speeches using AI and human expertise.
- Participated in Media Village 2023.
- In the framework of iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2022, post-doctoral researcher and data scientist, Ilias Dimitriadis, senior researcher and data scientist Pavlos Sermpezis along with professor Athena Vakali presented a set of tools developed and provided by the Data and Web Science Lab, which can empower media professionals to analyze and trust Twitter information.
- In addition, the iMEdD Lab and the Datalab of the Department of Informatics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have launched a collaborative research project on “The Greek wiretapping scandal on Twitter: The course of the conversation, polarization and the role of the media”.
School of Journalism & Mass Communications
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is one of the three communication departments in Greece. It was founded in 1991, with the mission to provide the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge for the practice of Journalism, to research issues related to the subject of Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as to contribute to the establishment of the Journalism Profession.
Each summer, Thessaloniki International Summer Academy on Media (THISAM) brings together an impressive group of people passionate about journalism and its ability to influence positive change. Attendees include early career journalists, students, media entrepreneurs, scholars, leaders of NGO’s and media industry leaders. Innovative ideas are shared and new business strategies developed. The focus is on creating a hands-on, interactive, interdisciplinary experience.
- Students of the Department of Digital Media and Communication attended the iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2025.
- Faculty members Charalampos Dimoulas, and Ioanna Kostarella, were part of the workshop “Understanding tampered images/deep fakes impact by monitoring user’s reactions through attention detection mechanism“, during the iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2024.
- Aggeliki Papatheodorou and Eleni Andronikidou students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki formed part of the pop-up newsroom set during the iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2024, covering real-time the Forum.
- Nikos Panagiotou, Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism & Mass Communications, and SNF Fellow, participated in a panel discussion regarding disinformation, democracy and elections, in the context of iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2019.
- In addition, iMEdD was among the co-hosting partners of the 5th Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy, organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Jean Monet Chair on European Union Public Diplomacy. iMEdD presented its philosophy and work under the title: “How organisations can contribute to the sustainability and future of journalism and media”, with the aim to familiarise, further inform and ultimately interact with the organisation. At the same time, the iMEdD Lab journalism team conducted the workshop: “REPORTING ON COVID DATA. Dos & Don’ts in Data Analysis – The case study of iMEdD Lab’s COVID tracker: Data collection, processing, and structuring with the use of Python”.
- iMEdD was also involved in the 6th THISAM (2022) by holding workshops.
